In the powder room/ small bath, you might paint the wood vanity with annie sloan chalk paint (doesn't require sanding) in a dark graphite / near black. maybe an accent wall in the accent tone for the headboard wall with white walls otherwise (better if you are a brunette i think). why not go for drama and contrast there, depending on your bed and bedding. In the master bedroom, you might use color in a way you haven't anywhere else. You might use the smaller rug you had in the apartment now over in your master bedroom, and buy a new overstock rug that was just the right size for the new living space eventually after we see how things come together. west elm has a contemporary version of these as inspiration pieces. For painting furniture, you'd go darker than even above - like You can look for classic shaker chairs and paint them black if that is closer to your vibe. once they are painted and inexpensively recovered in a black and white print sunbrella fabric (scrubbable). Painted a deep persimmon red they would signal your love of things more modern. Then we might paint some of the dining chairs for the breakfast space a deep red orange for that modern juxtaposition - you might have some hand me down chairs (even if the style is farm house to you). Black painted breakfast or dining room table plays into this adjacent to the kitchen - use a table you have, or find on craigslist, but refinish it with a quart of premixed black to inexpensively connect it to the space. Simple stained pine wood framed blackboard with 1 x 6 (they sell blackboard paint you can put on the wall) near the entry or kitchen plays into this. Imagine in the public spaces these elements. you might go bolder in a few specific spaces. or crisp white walls for specific places with contrasting trim. we might do a soft gray like bm moonshine. Paint is the absolute cheapest decorating device known to man, once you can learn to paint DIY (consult the petersik online archive for great directions on how to paint at ) So if you used accents sparingly like tomato red claret red we could try different things for the walls. i already have a fun strategy for that study room below. lets let the dark green be the man cave space only). that would be closer to apple green / if you love it speak up but otherwise. but it isn't really modern or transitional unless you use a citrus or neon tone as an accent. it is in one room, and at least green is a neutral. what do you think about using a persimmon color - not red, not orange but like the crayola 32 with red orange? (except for the one room, i would say ignore the green. what used to be / still is known in the deeper shades as taupe. Some grays are true grays, some sort of green undertone/earthy stone grays that can be like cement. You want to stay away from brighter shades of blue and blue green because it can make your wood look more orange (since it is opposite orange on the wheel). Most grays are cool and can head towards blue. One challenge for this to work well is for me to understand exactly the tones of gray that you have - take a photo of your upholstery with any one of your pillows just for tonal contrast and post it here. to get modern, I'm going to suggest that you select your accent color in the public spaces very deliberately and add things carefully. in fact, it is working with the absence of color until you deliberately add one back. ![]() to do it well, is nearly monochromatic except for color in art and pillows and a few accents. is not going to feed your color soul that called for teal and jewel tones though. a massive pallet wheel coffee table for instance would tie it all together. You might try to add one or two pieces of rustic industrial furniture with zinc metal tones and raw thick plank looks. and can be carried into some other public areas so the house flows. in fact, wood with black and gray and white fits right into the kitchen countertop scheme. if you like black and white and gray, and you prefer a more contemporary vibe, you can do a modern transitional home that would look very posh in this space with the wood. just give me feedback and I'll keep triangulating until we hit the sweet spot for you.
